openKylin at LAS 2024: Contributing to a Stronger Linux Ecosystem

2024-10-12 14:58:02

Recently, global Linux professionals gathered in Monterrey, Mexico, for the annual 2024 Linux Application Summit (LAS). As a regular participant for five years, openKylin took part virtually, where openKylin AOSP SIG member Huang Cailong and International Development Coordinator Wen Jiayi introduced the Kylin Mobile Runtime Environment (KMRE) project. Their presentation highlighted openKylin's contributions to improving the Linux application ecosystem, with KMRE offering a solution for running Android applications on Linux, helping to address the challenge of limited app availability on the platform.

Linux App Summit: A Global Gathering of the Open-Source Community

This year's LAS gathered a diverse group of participants, including technical experts and industry leaders from organizations like KDE, the GNOME Foundation, Red Hat, and the Thunderbird project, as well as CEOs, professionals, and academics representing countries such as the United States, Brazil, Nigeria, France, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the United Kingdom.

KMRE: Bringing New Possibilities to the Linux Ecosystem

Huang Cailong, representing openKylin AOSP SIG, emphasized that while Linux systems are known for their openness and stability, the lack of available applications remains a barrier to broader adoption. KMRE, developed by the openKylin AOSP SIG, uses container technology to enable Linux to run over 10,000 Android applications smoothly. These include widely-used apps like Tencent Meeting and Douyin (TikTok). KMRE enables multi-window display, allowing for full-screen, split-screen, and free scaling options. It supports screen sharing, application projection, and file transfer. This ensures a consistent display and operational experience between Android and Linux applications, effectively merging the two environments. KMRE has been designed to run on most mainstream Linux distributions and supports both ARM and x86 architectures, as well as cloud platforms. Its introduction is a significant step forward in addressing the gaps in application availability for Linux users, enhancing the overall user experience.

The openKylin team remains committed to further optimizing KMRE, with plans to expand the technology to other operating systems, such as Windows and iOS. By promoting broader adoption of Linux across various devices and application scenarios, openKylin aims to create a richer, more versatile ecosystem for users.
